Washed in the Water

Classically, Presbyterians have explained it this way: The sacrament of baptism is a washing with water in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, which is a sign and seal that we are joined to Christ, that we receive the benefits of the covenant of grace, and that we are engaged to be the Lord’s.

A sacrament is a sign with a promise instituted by Christ.  Or, more precisely, a holy regulation established by Christ, in which Christ and the benefits of the new covenant are represented, sealed, and applied to believers by physical signs.

There are two New Testament Sacraments: Baptism and the Lord’s Supper.  Baptism is the sacrament that begins the Christian life.

Presbyterians baptize those who have come to faith in Jesus Christ through the preaching of His word, and the children of believers, ordinarily members of the local congregation.
