Definition of Marriage

Since the Reformation, Presbyterians have defined marriage as a union between one man and one woman, designed of God to last as long as they both shall live.

Ordinarily the Kirk Session of First Church only authorizes the Minister to conduct a marriage when one of members of the couple is a member of the congregation. Several weeks of counseling are required, and in all cases only the Pastor of First Church may lead the service.

The Elders will, occasionally, make exceptions for couples who are recommended by their own Pastor to the Kirk Session, and who, by some hard providence, are unable to be married in their own church building. Such exceptions are rare.

The Pastor of First Church is happy to meet with any couple to talk about Christian marriage and how Church membership is an essential part of a healthy marriage. If you would like the Church’s help in starting or sustaining your marriage, please do use the contact form.
